Lila Ray
She arrived at the session the way so many women do: exhausted, overwhelmed, and carrying a list of symptoms she felt she had to “fix.” Brain fog. Irritability. A cycle that felt like an unpredictable storm she had to weather every twenty-eight days.
She called it “hormonal imbalance.” I called it a body that was simply tired of being told to hurry up.
We live in a culture of urgency – a world that demands a flat-line consistency from a body that was designed for seasons. We are told to produce, perform, and push through, regardless of where we are in our internal calendar. But for the female-bodied, our physiology is not a straight line; it is a spiral.
And right now, that spiral is being taxed by the high-stress era we inhabit.
When we live in a state of “constant-on,” our nervous system is perpetually scanning for a threat that never arrives. This isn’t just a mental state; it’s a biological one. When the brain perceives urgency, it prioritises survival over reproduction. It chooses cortisol over progesterone. It chooses the “now” over the “next cycle.”
We have been taught to view our “mood swings” or our “PMS” as a glitch in the system. But what if they aren’t glitches? What if they are the only way your body knows how to scream “Stop”?
When we ignore the subtle whispers of our luteal phase – the need for boundaries, the desire for silence, the pull toward the internal – our body is forced to turn up the volume. The “imbalance” isn’t the problem; it is the symptom of a life lived at a pace the human nervous system was never meant to sustain.
In my work at Completely Chantelle I often see women whose lab results say they are “fine,” yet their bodies feel like they are in a state of emergency. This is because a blood test can measure your levels, but it cannot measure your capacity. It cannot see the way you have been “holding it all together” for a decade.
Healing doesn’t come from a new supplement or a more rigid diet. It comes from reclaiming your rhythm. It comes from a somatic return to the body – learning to listen to the language of your nervous system before it has to shout.
If you feel “taxed” by the world right now, know this: Your body is not broken. Your hormones are not your enemy. They are your most honest messengers.
They are asking you to stop performing “consistency” in a world that doesn’t honour your cycles. They are asking you to trade urgency for presence.
This is an invitation to stop “managing” your symptoms and start listening to your body’s wisdom. It is time to return home to the rhythm you were born with.
