Most people think of hormones as something separate from the nervous system – like tiny messengers that just “do their thing” in the background. But the truth is, your hormones don’t operate in isolation. They take their cues from your nervous system. If your nervous system is dysregulated, your hormones will be too.
And in today’s world of constant stress, screens, and pressure to perform, this connection matters more than ever.
Your nervous system has two main branches:
When you spend too much time in survival mode, your body doesn’t prioritize balance. It’s too busy trying to keep you safe. This means digestion slows, reproduction gets sidelined, and stress hormones like cortisol stay high.
That’s why you might feel:
These aren’t random “hormone problems” – they’re signals that your nervous system has been stuck in overdrive.
When stress floods your system, cortisol rises. In short bursts, that’s fine – it helps you respond to challenges. But chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, and this creates a domino effect:
Your body isn’t broken. It’s adapting to a message: “We’re not safe right now.”
Talk alone can’t convince your body to relax. You can’t just think your way out of fight-or-flight. Somatic therapy works because it helps your body complete stress responses that were never fully processed.
Through practices like grounding, gentle movement, breathwork, and body awareness, you can teach your nervous system that it’s safe again. And once safety is restored, your hormonal system can return to balance.
Think of it like a traffic light:
Somatic practices are what help you move from red back to green.
Small, consistent practices can regulate your nervous system and, in turn, support hormonal harmony.
Your hormones aren’t separate from your stress levels. They’re deeply intertwined with how safe your body feels. By tending to your nervous system, you’re not just calming your mind – you’re giving your hormones the environment they need to do their job.
In other words: if you want balanced hormones, start with your nervous system. It’s the key your body has been waiting for you to turn.
