Today marks 304 days. 10 months.
If you had told me a year ago that I’d be sitting here, clear-eyed and vibrant, celebrating ten months without a drop of alcohol, I probably would have laughed – and then reached for a glass of wine to “take the edge off” my luteal phase.
But here we are. And because this is The Somatic Hormone Edit, I want to talk about the part of sobriety that people rarely mention: the biological and somatic transformation that happens when you stop numbing your system.
For years, I treated my PCOS like a problem to be solved and my nervous system like a fire to be put out. I didn’t realise that by drinking, I was effectively pouring gasoline on both.
We often talk about the ovaries as the stars of the show, but your liver is the stage manager. It’s responsible for metabolising and clearing out excess oestrogen. When your liver is busy processing alcohol, your hormones are forced to wait in line.
The result? Oestrogen dominance, heavier periods, and that “luteal dip” that feels less like a mood swing and more like a total identity crisis. 10 months ago, I decided to give my liver a promotion. I stopped asking it to process toxins and started asking it to process my health. The clarity I feel now isn’t just mental; it’s hormonal.
In the somatic world, we talk a lot about “felt sense” – the ability to actually feel what is happening inside your body in real time.
Alcohol is the ultimate “felt sense” killer. It creates a fake sense of safety in the nervous system. It “mutes” the anxiety, the burnout, and the whispers of our hormones. But when the mute button wears off, the noise is always louder.
Sobriety forced me to stop numbing the dysregulation and start noticing it. It was uncomfortable at first. I had to learn how to sit with my own “wrecked” feelings without a buffer. But in that discomfort, I found my sovereignty. I learned that I didn’t need wine to regulate my nervous system; I needed somatic tools, deep breathing, and a wide window of tolerance.
I’m not here to tell you that sobriety is a “magic pill” for hormonal balance. It’s not. My cycle still has its seasons. I still have days where I need to collapse onto the floor and practice 20 minutes of restorative somatic work.
But the difference is that now, I can hear the invitation.
I’m no longer at the mercy of a body I’ve spent years trying to silence. I am home. I am safe. And for the first time in my life, I feel like I like myself.
Have you noticed a connection between your habits and your cycle? How does your body “speak” to you when the noise is turned down?
